Julianne Lipscomb is thrilled to have her family visit for their annual gathering in the small town of Helen, Georgia. While sibling rivalries arise, it is Harvey, Julianne’s husband, who is the center of attention. Harvey is fading away with age, but in the tempest that is their gathering, it is Harvey and his secret past that upset the gathering at the Lipscomb home.
One morning, lost in thought, Harvey admits that he has lost a son years earlier. Harvey’s confession is the beginning of many startling confessions. Harvey has other families, other demons. But in the chaos of Julianne’s daughters’ marital difficulties, Harvey’s problems are temporarily pushed to the side. Problems never settled come back to haunt, and for the Lipscomb family, the youngest family members are the ones to suffer the greatest later on.
Aaron, years older now and wandering from city to city, isn’t sure if his grandfather ever did anything inappropriate, but he’s positive Graham Oggy, his father’s boss, has. While Aaron has learned to deal with his being a victim, he struggles to not become the victimizer. He has good people around him, supportive people, but they have their own issues, their own problems to deal with. While time has passed, nothing has healed, either for him or his parents, who have drifted apart over the course of a couple of decades of denial, twisted prerogatives, and their inability to cope with the dips in the road as they chase success.
For Hadley, Aaron’s cousin, life is just as difficult. Hadley’s parents have divorced, due in large part to Aaron’s father, who, without having intended to, was promoted to a role Hadley’s father believed was rightfully his. Step in Graham Oggy. Mr. Oggy is a philanthropic man with a fondness for young boys and an ability to make business stars of middle management. Taking nothing else into consideration, Mr. Oggy promotes Michael, Aaron’s father, so he can be closer to Aaron. But in the process, Mr. Oggy destroys Hadley’s family; James, Hadley’s father, is devastated by the loss of his next promotion, and goes into a downward spiral from which he never recovers.
Yet in the end, when all hope is seemingly lost, it is Hadley, the youngest of the Lipscomb women, who seeks, and ultimately accepts, the truth of who Harvey was, and most importantly, who they, the Lipscombs, are.

Reminding us to validate our loving connections, hold dearest to those who know us best and forgive and allow for error.Each character is so vastly different and the author writes in the voice of each character. You feel who they are through their own words. Truly remarkable. I only wish it were longer.

Enjoyed the very detailed book. Bought extra copies and gave them to my sons. Very impressive work.
A beautifully written novel! It's exactly the kind of book you want to cozy up with at the end of a long day. As the story progressed, I was drawn deeper into the characters' lives, and the book was harder to put down. You can definitely put this on your "must read" list. I'm looking forward to Mr. Perlman's next novel!
Cully Perlman’s The Losses is a deconstruction of family relationships that is carefully reconstructed to depict what family dysfunction looks like at it’s best. Perlman’s attempt to “normalize” this dysfunction by building solid characters is evidence that he is capable of revealing intricate and relatable context for his reader. He does an excellent job of showing how history shapes who we are in the present moment, and how often the complexities of relationships are an intricate web that we sometimes get stuck in.
The Losses by Cully Perlman did two very different, deftly meshed things to me as a reader. First, it gave me a spectator’s view of a family’s misery. The story unfolds during a Christmas holiday, intended to be a weeks long retreat at the parents’ cabin near a touristy mountain town in Georgia. Because we know that unhappy families are each unhappy in their own way, it’s no surprise that as the yuletide gathering proceeds, it becomes clear it’s been a long time since any one of those people, individually, was happy.
But the mother, Jules, like a powerful magnet, draws them all toward her and near one another. She hopes that her love, shown in cooking, cuddling children, displaying an unswerving sort of maternal goodness, and showering wifely concern on Harv, her current spouse, will create harmony and joy. He’s not the father of her three daughters. That man, Measly Beasley, long departed, is a shadow that moves among them with the substance of an all too real member of the family. Nothing goes well.
As I read, I began wondering if there would only get worse and the days progressed. But then, around page 115, that second thing I mentioned occurred. It was as if, Perlman stood behind me, took me by the shoulders, and said, “You thought this was bad, now you’re going to see up close, like the first on the scene of a terrible car crash, just how bad it can become. Yeah, maybe something good can happen too, but….” Gone is the omniscient narrator who gave me slight comfort with some distance from the steady move toward the misery. Now I was watching at first hand, through the eyes of one character, Cliff, just how life unravels. Oddly, that switch to a first person narrator for a single chapter gave me a reason to stop and reflect before reading on. From then on the novel moves in broad dramatic strokes toward an ending that might just be perfect.
You should read this, not only for the story, which is excellent, but also to see what a skillful writer can do with deft technique and a strong grasp of the effects of individual actions upon an entire family. The book’s cover says it’s Perlman’s debut. Perhaps it’s his first published novel, but The Losses is certainly not the work of a neophyte. It’s a masterfully wrought novel.
Cully Perlman has written a story about a family dealing with issues that seem to stem during a family reunion during the holidays , but as the story goes on we learn that ghosts from the past will have irreparable consequences in the future.
I love that Perlman has given everyone here a voice, dedicating large chunks of the novel to all the main players. And like many families, he reveals the skeletons in the closet slowly, and without revealing too much at once, like many families are apt to do. What I love most is that Perlman plays with point of view and form without being pretentious. The story is high-brow but not inaccessible.
Good or bad, charming or not, everyone has their say and by the end, even with all its faults, you love this family and its individuals. I dare you not to find some reflection of your own family within these pages.

Cully Perlman writes a wonderful novel I couldn't put down. The characters are strong, the subject matter is universal with a complex look at families and how we all deal with the secrets of loved ones.
